Extradural tumours in children presenting as paraplegia.

چکیده
Of 214 children with malignant tumours admitted in the Children’s Hospital between 1987 to 1991, six (2.8%) had spinal cord compression. The diagnosis and levels of spinal cord compression were substantiated by Omnipaque myelography in all patients. Location of the lesion was confirmed by laminectomy. Biopsy and histopathology were done to confirm the tumour types. Spine roentgenography as well as examination of CSF and bone marrow were performed in all patients. The tumours presenting with spinal cord compression are shown in Table I.

Thoracic Nerve Root Schwannoma Filling the Spinal Canal Almost Entirely Without any Neurological Deficits
INTRODUCTION Spinal tumours may be classified in three groups: 1) extradural, 2) intradural extramedullary and 3) intramedullary spinal cord tumours. Intradural extramedullary tumours arise from the leptomeninges or nerve roots and include schwannomas. A schwannoma is usually a firm grey-whitish tumour growing near a nerve trunk or ramus. It can be separated from the nerve without damaging neur...
متن کاملThoracic vertebral hemangioma causing paraplegia in Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome: case report.
Vertebral hemangiomas are the most common tumours of the vertebral column. Generally, these tumours are asymptomatic but some patients complain of back pain and develop neurologic symptoms due to extraosseous extension. Vertebral hemangiomas can extend extradurally causing neurological impairment as a result of compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots. Vertebral hemangiomas may be multipl...
متن کاملDelayed spinal extradural hematoma following thoracic spine surgery and resulting in paraplegia: a case report
INTRODUCTION Postoperative spinal extradural hematomas are rare. Most of the cases that have been reported occured within 3 days of surgery. Their occurrence in a delayed form, that is, more than 72 hours after surgery, is very rare. This case is being reported to enhance awareness of delayed postoperative spinal extradural hematomas. CASE PRESENTATION We report a case of acute onset dorsal s...
متن کاملImaging in Children with Spinal Tuberculosis
We compared the usefulness of radiography, CT and MRI in 25 children with spinal tuberculosis. Radiography provided most of the information necessary for diagnosis and treatment. Axial CF was the most accurate method for visualising the posterior bony elements. Sagittal MRI best showed the severity and content of extradural compression and helped to differentiate between an abscess and fibrous ...
